- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WIE WANTS IN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As hard as it is to get into the U.S. Open, young Michelle Wie will have a go at it, beginning May 13 in an 18-hole qualifier at Turtle Bay on Oahu, Hawaii. Perhaps she's encouraged by the fact that on this same course she tied for second place in an LPGA event last year. She'll have to do at least that well this time in order to advance, but this time she'll have to play from the long tees. The subsequent challenge will be a 36-hole sectional test in June. Her father, B.J. Wie, acknowledges that her chances of qualifying are slim, but says his daughter is driven by a desire to play against the very best. "Michelle is excited about this," he said. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOLF CAN'T BE THIS SIMPLE . . . CAN IT?

I've been talking to some folks doing business with club foundries and shaft makers in China. It seems that the big box stores are becoming the biggest customers of some of these companies. Like they have done in the U.S. these stores are really squeezing their manufacturers on price. The result is some of the components coming out of China with some fairly big names (mostly private label) on them are now of lesser quality. They may look that same as other clubs but shafts are being made with fewer wraps of fiberglass and shortcuts are being taken with head manufacture and finish also. It's buyer beware and make darn sure you get a real good guarantee. I'd certainly suggest hitting any club preferably on a launch monitor before you buy them. (Note: We're not talking about clubs from the top tier golf club manufacturers here.) Joe Davidson - Publisher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ARE THEY RIGHT FOR YOU? (CHIP TO FIND OUT) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One way to get an idea whether a potentially new set of golf clubs is right for you is to chip with some of the irons. In doing so you'll get feedback about the solidity of impact, how the ball responds to contact with the clubface, and what feeling is in your hands at the moment of contact. Your pro should be more than willing to oblige. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MARTHA NIPS AT CORPORATE HEELS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Martha Burk has made another Masters appearance, but not in the same manner as when she without result fired all her guns in 2003 to protest Augusta National's male-only policy. This time her tactic was to intimidate corporate sponsors of the event, including IBM, SBC Communications and Exxon Mobil, by asking them to provide data to prove that they do not discriminate against women in their hiring, pay, and promotion of women. Burk, who is chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations, has stated outright that the cited companies are all guilty of such discrimination. This year's Masters is the first to have TV sponsorship since 2003. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HYBRIDS ARE BECOMING THOROUGHBREDS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hybrids are becoming more and more popular. They are replacing long irons even in many touring pro bags. Soon you'll see them replacing many middle irons. Some folks are playing whole sets of hybrids. Thomas Golf is one company making a whole line of hybrids at very reasonable prices. I always carry at least one or two Thomas hybrids in my bag. If you're looking to try out a hybrids I'd definitely recommend checking out Thomas because they will make sure you're fit to the right club. For only $62 a club they are a real hybrid bargain. http://golfhelp.com/cgi-bin/lnkinlte.cgi?l=thomashybrids Joe Davidson - Publisher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PUTT WITH GOLD - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Looking for a gift for the golfer who has everything? How about a gold plated putter commemorating the 27th time the Open Championship will be played on the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Old Course Putter, designed and made by Scotland's best club makers, features heavy gold plate from head to cap, and is engraved with the official St Andrews Links logo. It comes in a key-locked, velvet-lined mahogany case. It's balanced for accuracy and feel. An edition of only 10 Old Course putters are available for sale. Price (online only): $1,900/ea. www.standrews.org.uk - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MASTERS-ONLY GOLF BALL POSSIBLE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The folks at Augusta National are cooling their heel s for the time being, but if push comes to shove, they say they won't hesitate to create a Masters-only golf ball. What they're waiting for is the USGA's move to limit golf ball travel distance in a way that protects the integrity of Augusta National's layout. The course has been lengthened as much as it can be, and officials there are ready to take a different tack if need be. Augusta National chairman Hootie Johnson said last week that he was hopeful the "governing bodies would want to do something about what everyone in golf considers to be a serious problem." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (TITLEIST 905 DRIVERS) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In case you haven't noticed, Titleist has two new 905 drivers. These are the 905S and the 905T. They replace the pair called 983K/E. In a market that's increasingly difficult to penetrate with "new and improved" equipment, the folks at Acushnet say they've broken new ground. The maker claims to have taken weight out an unproductive area (the hosel), and more efficiently located it at the center of gravity, which is located lower and closer to the center of the clubface. These changes have increased the launch angle of the clubs. The increase in loft is "counteracted" by a decrease in spin. Result: five more yards. MSRP: $499 www.titleist.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SITE TO SEE (PUTTPALUSA.COM) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you don't have $1,900 to spend on a gold plated putter (see above) for you significant other, consider buying him or her a Putt Pal from Putt Pal USA. The Putt Pal is a "revolutionary" greens brush - yes, we said greens brush - for sweeping loose impediments from your putting line. How many time have you wished you could eliminate sand from that line. Pretty hard to do without help. The Putt Pal brush or its companion, the Pocket Putt Pal can do the job. And, yes, it's legal by virtue of a 2004 USGA rules change. www.puttpalusa.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Free SimpleSwing Chipping System Ebook!! "Nonsense! These are professional golfers who are supposed to possess a high level of skill. We are being guarded by men and women in the military who are younger than most pro golfers who have to handle highly technical equipment in the face of all sorts of dangers and weather environments. Now do we really have to hear about the problems of the 17th on the rare tournament days of bad wind?" Time for a whiff of reality I think. RV
". . . the 17th hole is an abomination that neither tests the skill of the golfer or his ability to make miraculous shots. With a 35-40 mile per hour wind this hole is hit accidentally more that it is on purpose." Richard Laramy
". . . it should be a major and the time of year is good. Quit whining about one hole. In the famous words of Pat Hill 'shut up and play.'" TC (Pat Hill? Ed.)
"First, no to major status. That means future major winners would get an asterisk by their names to denote the added event. Golf needs to respect it's traditions. It's a nice tournament and, given spring in Florida, the timing could be changed. Do agree that the 17th is out of place. Makes a good hole to have a closest to the pin contest. I would prefer to see skill, not luck, win an event. With high wind and rain, the hole is a joke. . ." MK
"The 17th hole at Sawgrass is a lot like real life. There are things . . . you just don't want to have to face, but guess what, you have to and you get through it. This hole (and the weather) really separates the men from the boys." Jerry
"Oh my! Those poor guys that have to fight off wind, rain and small greens. Come on, that's what their skills are about. The PGA should make each hole easy, right? WRONG! They are playing for the most money ever. . . Stop complaining and play the game." JES
About the forthcoming Hall of Fame picks:
". . . have a concern regarding the upcoming World Golf Hall of Fame selection. Should Henry Picard not be selected, I shall forever give up considering the Hall of Fame as an important barometer. Pic won two majors and 36 events, though the records say 32. He played on four Ryder Cup teams. His record is better than some already selected. He is a member of the PGA Hall of Fame. It seems that many of the Halls of various sports have forgotten those who made the game and are nothing but popularity contests." Mike Lucas - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HE SAID - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "I will go and hang upside down like a fruit bat or something to try to stretch it out." - suggesting what he might do to address the back ailment that kept him out of the Masters. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Rights and Wrongs of Golf---One hour and fifteen minutes of video to improve your game! = A Golf Digest survey revealed that among 184 golf courses in countries other than the U.S., the Old Course at St. Andrews ranks highest.
= The New York Times reports that because more and more children have taken up golf, head injuries from errant swings and cart mishaps have become the second most prevalent injury to the young next to bicycling.
