YOUR THOUGHTS?
Turning away from the men again for the moment if we may, we
turn our (your) attention to Annika Soremstam, whom some have
called the best golfer on the planet. (See COLUMN TO READ:
SIRAK ON SORENSTAM below.)  A couple of questions come to
mind:  is she that good, and if so, why isn't she getting the
recognition she deserves?  Any thoughts?

COLUMN TO READ: SIRAK ON SORENSTAM
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Golf World's Ron Sirak, writing about Annika Sorenstam after
her stunning win by eight strokes over Rosie Jones, at the
Kraft Nabisco, suggests that Sorenstam is so good that it's not
unreasonable to suggest she could win every tournament she enters this
season.  She had already won five consecutive events,
including two at the end of last year.  Among the impressive
array of "Sorenstatistics" Sirak compiles is not only the fact
of her 59 career wins so far, but also that in her quest to
someday shoot 54 (18 birdies) the goal-oriented Swede has
already done 13 of18.

   KEEP IT SQUARE (THE CLUBFACE)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Here's another takeaway drill. Use two balls, your setup ball
and then a second ball. Place the second ball about two feet
outside your back foot, on your toe line or a little bit
inside.  Now go to the halfway back position and stop.  Then
turn around and put the club down. It should go down right
behind this second ball, aimed at the target with a square
clubface. If it's not, you, you either closed it down or
rolled it open.  Practice.

USGA ASKS MAKERS FOR SHORTER BALLS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The USGA has once again been in touch with golf equipment
manufacturers, just a few days after getting in touch with
them to say it will be looking at the possibility of creating
new equipment standards.  This time the golf ball was the
subject of the communication.  The USGA has written to 35 ball
makers to ask them to submit prototypes of balls that will
travel 15 and 25 yards less than what is the norm today.
Stressing that this would be a strictly voluntary activity on
the part of companies, tech director Dick Rugge said, "We
believe that it is now appropriate to give golf ball
manufacturers an opportunity to participate in the research
project and thereby become involved in the rule change process
if that becomes necessary."  So far it is too soon to assess
what the overall response to Rugge's  be, but it's been
rumored that at least one ball maker has signed on to take
part.  For the most part, the industry has been positive about
the USGA's efforts to address the issue of ball travel in a
forthright and informed manner.

   NATURAL GOLF DELISTED AND BANKRUPT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Tough times for Natural Golf continue. They have been delisted from the
AMEX stock exchange and they failed to file their 10-Q with the SEC.
About it's financial status Natural Golf says, "The subject quarterly
report on Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended February 28, 2005
could not be filed without unreasonable effort or expense because of
the pending status of a transaction that would involve the disposition
of substantially all of the Company's assets in a reorganization under
Chapter 11 of the Federal bankruptcy laws."

   NOTEWORTHY (BEN HOGAN WOODS)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The new Ben Hogan woods, called Big Ben C-S3 (Custom Shaping
System),  are designed with the recreational golfer in mind.
Inside the head of the 400cc titanium driver are three
factory-placed fixed weight cartridges.  Depending on your
tendency to draw, fade, or hit straight, you can opt for any
of three different weight distributions.  Also new, the Big
Ben Hogan fairway woods (C 455) are of stainless steel, and
employ a proprietary  Speed Slot design that makes for
"aerodynamic efficiency" and increased clubhead speed,
according to company literature.  MSRP:  $399 (C-S3); $225
(C455)

   JACK, GARY TO COACH AGAIN
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player will return as captains of the
U.S. and International President's Cup teams, 2005. Both posed
for pictures with president Bush last week in the Oval Office,
and both affirmed that this competition is no place for a
"blood and guts" display.  Nicklaus said later that he will
honor the wishes of players who would prefer to play with or
not to play with certain other players.  Nicklaus said of his
strategy toward his team will be that he will "basically be
their friend, accommodate them, make sure I have plenty of
tees, extra spikes, fresh towels, sunscreen.''  The 2003 event
ended in a mutually agreed to, but controversial tie after
neither team scored to advantage following three playoff
holes.  The rules have been changed since to honor a tie, if
need be, after regulation play. The Americans are 3-1-1
against the International team in the Presidents Cup, which
was established in 1994.

BOBBY JONES BIO A MUST READ
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Here's a terrific gift idea for golfing dads on Fathers Day.
Seventy-five years ago Bobby Jones won golf's Grand Slam, the
first and only time it's ever been done. Jones the man and
Jones the golfer are portrayed with grace and style in Ron
Rappoport's The Immortal Bobby, published this month by Wiley
& Sons.  Pre-publication reviews testify to the writing as
biography at its finest, shedding new light on Jones and
placing him in fascinating and accurate historical
perspective.

TWO ACES (SAME GOLFER, SAME ROUND)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Boynton Beach, Florida golfer Jim Bounds scored not one, but
two holes-in-one in the same round last month at the Atlantis
Country Club and Inn.  Trying to decide on a golf ball to use
in the next stage of qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur
Championship, Bounds made the first ace on the 140-yard fifth
hole with a Callaway Tour HX ball, and the second on the
169-yard 17th with a Titleist Pro V1x. Atlantis CC Director of
Golf Todd Leckrone awarded Bounds a one-year membership to
honor his unique feat.  We don't know which ball he settled
on.

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About Michelle Wie's Open chances:

". . . She just can't get it close enough to the hole
consistently to compete with the men. Why does she think that
she can compete with guys who are   hitting 3 woods and 2
irons off the tee longer than her?  I guess that I would be
more interested about this if she were beating the best boys
in amateur tournaments, but she hardly ever plays anyone her
own age. . . ." Glen Flanagan

"Why can't Michelle Wie play against people her own age?  You
didn't see Tiger playing in PGA events as a youngster.  Earl
Woods made him play against people his own age and taught
Tiger how to win and dominate.  Michelle can't even win the US
Amateur, yet thinks she can participate against the PGAs best?
. . . ." Gord (Edmonton)

"It would seem that we are stuck with her ambition.  Until the
PGA puts a male by birth requirement on the table, like the
LPGA's, we get these situations. . . ." MK

"Not only will she qualify for the US Open, she will be a card
carrying member of the PGA Tour by time she turns 20." EG

". . . Michelle is a very lovely young girl who has a bright
future ahead of her.  However, I think that at this stage of
her career, attempting to compete in the U.S. Open is a real
mistake.  She simply does not have the consistent distance or
the power to play the ball from U.S. Open rough. . . ."

    HE SAID
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
"Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what
you are inclined
to do, and you will probably come very close to having a
perfect golf swing. Go play golf. Go to the golf course. Hit
the ball. Find the ball. Repeat until the ball is in the
hole."  - Chuck Hogan

= Wendy Ward shot a 16-under-par 200 for a one-shot victory
over Lorena Ochoa at the Takefuji Classic.

= Peter Lonard finished with a 4-over 75 on Sunday, but that
didn't keep him from winning the MCI Heritage.

= David Frost broke the PGA Tour's 16-year-old record for
fewest putts in a tournament, needing just 92 last week at the
MCI Heritage.
