YOUR THOUGHTS? It's early to be thinking about the 2006 Ryder Cup matches, but since U.S. captain designee Tom Lehman has been so often in the news recently, we thought we'd try for some reader views. First, we're wondering about the choice of Lehman as captain. Good? So-so? Bad? Then, what about Lehman's desire to be a player/captain? (See PLAYER/CAPTAIN LEHMAN? below.) His choosing Loren Roberts and Corey Pavin to assist him? Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

The man who will lead the U.S. Ryder Cup players in 2006 said recently, "I guess I'm pretty much at peace with my game, and I've got a great family, great life." Lehman was encouraged to suggest he might make the team 2006 himself after a solid performance last month in the Buick Invitational where he shot a first round 62. A three-time former Ryder Cup team member, Lehman last won on the Tour at the Phoenix Open in 2000. Can the 1996 British Open winner keep pace with Els, Singh, Woods, etc.? Time always tells. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SIMPLESWING™ - THE NEW EASY-TO-LEARN GOLF SWING SimpleSwing is the amazing new golf swing that has been engineered from the ground up to be the easiest possible way to learn to hit a golf ball long and straight. (LET THE WEDGE WORK) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Your ball is in a bunker, and you are getting ready to muscle it out of there. Don't. Just because you have to move both sand and ball together does not mean you have to power up. Conversely, this is the time to stay loose on the grip and let the wedge do the work. Its head is designed slip through the sand and under the ball without a fight - unless you bring it on. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SOME WOULD SUE THE CHAMPIONS TOUR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The latest chapter in the Champions Tour's cart controversy has player Tom Purtzer and Ed Fiori threatening to sue the Tour unless it reverses a policy change that prohibits their use of carts during official events. The new rule permits cart use only by players who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Purtzer's back condition keeps him from walking long distances. Fiori has a heart condition. Former PGA star and sometime Champions Tour player Chi Chi Rodriquez has lent his support to the cause by consulting with the ACLU. The Tour remains firm about the no-cart policy. Moving carts, it claims, create an undesirable separation of fans and players. They also suggest that Champions Tour players are lesser athletes than their PGA Tour counterparts. There appears to be general, if unspoken, support for a policy reversal among many of the other players. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Quickest Way To A Better Game With the New Year...is a “new start”. A cylindrical cushion is designed to break away from a stand on contact from a club swung off-plane. Aimed primarily at curing over-the-top swings or swings too much from the inside, Inside Approach can be adjusted to encourage or discourage any kind of swing path. Cost: $59.98 (or two payments of $29.99) plus S&H. www.insideapproach.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - COLUMN TO READ (BY GOLF WORLD'S JAIME DIAZ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We saw a bit of ourself in Jaime Diaz's Golf World piece entitled The Upside of a Down Tiger. We have to admit that despite all the oohs and aahs the Tiger provoked in us while he was the "boss," we weren't always solidly behind him. Maybe it was jealousy , or envy, but we sometimes wanted him to lose. According to Diaz, many others of us felt the same way. But now that Woods has suffered the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune," - now that he's become more like one of us - we are rooting for him more enthusiastically than ever. Check out the article. See if you're in there, too. <http://www.golfdigest.com/newsandtour/index.ssf?/newsandtour/g w20050128diaz.html> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (COBRA BAFFLER) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In case you think utility clubs are a recent phenomenon, know that Cobra Golf introduced the original Baffler in 1975. The most recent Baffler edition comes on the scene as a utility "metal," and is available in versions for men (2/R, 3/R, 4/R and 5/R) and for women (3/R, 4/R, 5/R and 6/R). All feature a contoured sole plate with low and back center of gravity to help players get the ball airborne from a variety of lies. A large clubface accommodates and expanded sweet spot with what Cobra refers to as nine "hot" points. MSRP: $160 (steel); $180 (graphite). www.cobragolf.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About the Tour's perceived lack of pizzazz:
"There was a day when excitement prevailed in anticipation of the weekend of TV golf. Players were excited to be in contention and showed it. Most of them had fun on the course and let the fans know they appreciated their attendance and support. Now, they don't seem to give a damn about anything except the paycheck. . . . Much like all other sports the pros simply could care less about the fans. Too bad." Jerry Withrow
". . . the problem is with the writers. They need hype to help them write, always trying to stir up a controversy or rivalry to sell their story. I couldn't care less if none of the pros spoke. Their talent speaks for them. . . ." Chris Overshiner
"Fans like a front runner or someone chasing a front runner. When Tiger was dominating you were either for or against him. Either way you watched. Now there is a little more parity among the players. . . . The game is solid and the PGA should be promoting the quality of play." Curtis Queen (Newton, NC)
". . . In defense for the players, if I had the opportunity to win a potential $800,000 first place check, most assuredly I would be focused on winning rather than signing an autograph, smiling all the time (It's not the Grammies.). Its called focus, and most people take it the wrong way. Jesse Encarnacion
". . . look at the length of the season (if there be a season anymore) in which there is no real hiatus and really no tour to be defined as such. There was once a season beginning with the Los Angeles Open in January and then the movement through the desert to Florida and then the first major in March extending to the PGA championship in late summer. This was all corrupted with quirky tournaments: skins games, par-three tourneys . . . tournaments for tournaments' sake . . . The public appetite is sated just as it is with tennis where the same robotic souls trot out one more time. . . ." J. Cardoso
". . . cut down on all the commercials during a PGA event. . . . really bad when the competition becomes head to head and there are 3 1/2 minute commercial breaks after each shot. . . ." Ken (Kansas City)
" In . . . baseball, the fans don't expect the top hitters to stop and talk to the fans while walking to the plate or between pitches. We don't expect the shortstop to be having a conversation with the fans between batters. We shouldn't expect it in golf either. . . ." Richard K. Roush
". . . people are losing interest in the PGA is because the media are not putting the spotlight on the top players the way they did when Tiger Woods was in that position. . . . If TV commentators would "hype" Vijay the way they did Tiger a few years ago, the tide of popularity of the PGA would again turn for the better." GM
". . . Between the players who are far too serious and the constant barrage of moronic commercials, it's becoming harder and harder to watch, let alone get enthused about the Tour. . . ." Jim Shannon (Minneapolis)
"Me, I'd settle for good competition. I enjoy seeing a player on a roll but, not long term domination by anyone. . . ." MK
"Well, first the players need to grow a personality or two. Tiger is awesome, as always, John Daly is totally fun, and we love Jesper's clothes, but VJ, well, watching him play golf is kinda like watching your Mercedes at idle . . ." Christopher "CB" Maxwell
"If the tour suffers from lack of glamour, it's not for lack of the personality of the players. It is in the environment in which they toil. With a few exceptions, PGA events are set up to be consistent, i.e. 72 holes at stroke play over courses giving up winning scores from -12 to -20 (or better) under par. Those that strive to win every event are very few. . . . plenty of dollars to go around to keep the bottom feeders happy just above the 125 exempt line. Why should the majority of players demonstrate panache and flair when the Tour pros view their pursuit on the course as business as opposed to sport." Jeff Stern, NC - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HE SAID - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "He whipped the field playing lousy. I give him a lot of credit." - Tom Lehman, about Tiger Woods' win at the Buick Invitational. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Just Because There's Frost and Snow On The Ground Doesn't Mean That Your Golf Game Can't Get Better RIGHT NOW!
