YOUR THOUGHTS? The Ladies Golf Union (Great Britain, Ireland) announced last week a change in its rules to allow players who have undergone a male-to-female sex change to play in its events. (See LGU RULES ON GENDER ISSUE below.) The USGA and LPGA have yet to take a stand. Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

That may change once USGA and LPGA officials have revisited the issue following the Brit's Ladies Golf Union recent decision to alter its position on the matter. In that part of the golf world individuals who have undergone a sex change operation may now enter competitions, including the Women's British Open. The LGU move follows on the heels of similar pronouncements by the Ladies European Tour and the Australian Ladies Professional Tour. In order to reverse its present position, the LPGA would need to rewrite its bylaws and conduct a membership vote. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DO YOU WANT TO BE A BETTER GOLFER?? The next time you're on the practice range, with each shot, hold your finish position as long as it takes for the ball to hit the ground. (Actually, that would be easy for some of us.) This will help you develop a consistent swing motion, which should translate into better shots (if not a hernia). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - INTRODUCING: NEW TEENAGE STANDOUT - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In case it hasn't come to your attention, there's a new star in the firmament of young female players. She's Ai Myazato, 19, an Okinawan whose golf instructor father put a putter in her hands when she was four. Between then and now she became good enough to earn her card in Japan and partner with Rui Kitada and to win the inaugural Women's World Cup of Golf two weeks ago in South Africa. Miyazato is already a celebrity in her own country, winning $1 million in her rookie year. Look for her in this season's Kraft Nabisco Championship in March and most likely on the LPGA Tour in 2006. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (GOLF BAG FOR LEFTIES) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Izzo Golf claims always to have had the interests and needs of left handed golfers in mind, where others are guilty of gross neglect. Hence, Izzo's development of the Legacy stand bag (good for walking or occasional riding) and the Spirit stand bag (for hard core walkers), both of which are "perfect" for the southpaw golfer. This concern in particular takes the form of an easy-to-use dual carry strap system, a strategically place lumbar support, and a club alignment system designed with lefties in mind. The bags are available in several attractive colors. So, too, the NBA and major league baseball. So, in light of recent flaps over steroids (Jason Giambe, etc.), the question came up again about whether professional golfers should be tested as well. No way, says PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem. In a recent interview, Finchem said he doesn't see a way that steroids use could help improve a golfer's performance since golf is not so much a power sport as are the others. Besides, he added, since golf is a sport built on honor, that should preclude any need for testing. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - COLUMN TO READ (IS WORLD GOLF RANKING NECESSARY?) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thegolfchannel.com columnist Kraig Kann wondered last week just how important are world golf rankings, and offered what he thinks are the pluses and minuses of a system that establishes fractional distinctions in the standings, say, between No. 1 and No. 2. "Do you care? Does it really matter? Is Tiger better than Vijay?" he asks. He likes the fact that WGR gives the players something to aim at, but dislikes that attitudes toward some tournaments are formed based on how many top-ranked players are entered. ". . . back in 1975 when they still played Spyglass, Pebble, and Cypress Point. Used to be more fun than now. Better crop of celebrities who loved to have fun . . . Bill Murray is the only fun one now. When Ray Romano is the star of the tournament ??? . . ." Michael Stewart
". . . . should definitely remain a part of the PGA Tour. It has a rich tradition with the likes of Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Phil Harris, Jack Lemmon and many other great entertainers who wanted to have fun and play with the pros. Today's tour lacks the personality of the PGA golfers of the past. In this tournament the fans, the amateurs and even many of the stoic pros demonstrate that they are having fun. . . ." Ron Bliz
"The mystique and tradition of what was Bing Crosby's clambake essentially died with him. . . . ." Jeff Stern
". . . numerous events on the schedule, particularly during what is described as the 'silly season' could go away. Any skins event. Special competitions pairing the big names on the several tours. . . . the Pro Am and the match play event put a little fun back into what is truly becoming a rich man's game . . . ." MK
". . . like the tournament but think the amateur part should end on Friday." Pete Dooley
". . . love watching pebble on TV. Except for Bill Murray it is a keeper. . . ." JR
". . . . it gives the average golfer the feeling that, yes, they (too) can compete and can play in such tournaments . . . ."
