YOUR THOUGHTS? Justin Leonard's win at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic reminded us that short-ball hitters can still win this game. Here's a guy who, even though his driving distance has improved slightly with Nike's (410cc Ignite) help, will never be known for distance, yet he managed to win the five-round event handily three-up on Tim Clark and Joe Ogilvie. (See CREDIT THE WINDS ? below.) As of this writing, Leonard is ranked 149 on the PGA driving distance list. Clark and Ogilvie rank 73 and 87, respectively. In a world obsessed with distance and at the same time concerned about the so-called unfair advantages the big hitters get from technology, does Justin Leonard's recent success carry a message? Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

CHAMPIONS No event scheduled. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CREDIT THE WINDS ? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - After four rounds of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in near ideal conditions, the winds began to blow in round five. They blew so nastily that they carried away Tim Clark's and Joe Ogilvie's chance to win. On the other hand, they did Justin Leonard a favor. He can play well in the wind, they say, because he's from Texas (so is Ogilvie). So while the wind was eliminating from contention player after player, Leonard went ahead and shot a five-under 67, which turned out to be two more than he needed for the win, his first since the Honda Classic in 2003. In the meantime, he's "given away" more events than he's won. Keep your hands quiet and ahead of the club head throughout the swing, and your ball will track to the hole, for sure. Lay a club on the ground just inside the ball and along the target line, and practice swinging back and through without touching it (the shaft). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW REPORT - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The PGA Show was good but not great. Some of the big names (Ping, Taylor Made, Titleist, etc) still didn't show up. But, guess what nobody missed them. Some companies like Burrows Golf (Mac Drivers) and Natural Golf who have had large presences at the show in past years have fallen on very hard times and they just weren't there anymore. There were still plenty of interesting new products to look at. In years past on one end of the show there used to be rows and rows of the small ten foot booths. That's where the action and excitement was. Now they have everyone grouped in "Pavilions" with other companies of the same type. Nice, but quite a bit less exciting. It also seemed a bit harder to find your way back to a particular booth and the map in the show book was absolutely no help. Even the daily show guides seemed to have omissions. I saw a few continuing trends. Obviously, the drivers are all near 460cc whether that's the best size or not. The 2 iron and 3 iron are dead and the 4 iron is on life support. Everybody now is pushing hybrids. Mallet putters are everywhere. I expect mallets to continue to edge up in market share. They had the Demo Day at the Orange County National Golf Course again. Great opportunity to try all the different manufacturers products. The weather had been cold in Orlando earlier in the week but it warmed up and proved to be a great opportunity to try clubs side by side. Overall the show was probably up 5-10 % from last year I haven't seen the official number yet but that's what it felt like. Not bad, but no big golf industry recovery yet either. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A BUSY SUMMER FOR MS. WIE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It looks like a lock for Michelle Wie to play in all four LPGA majors this season. The high school sophomore accepted an invitation last week to play in the McDonald's LPGA Championship, a professionals-only venue until a recent rules change to let in a "leading amateur." Wie has already committed to play in the Kraft Nabisco Championship on March 24-27. She has already qualified for the U.S. Women's Open in late June, and, most recently, garnered an exemption for the Women's British Open in July. That's a lot of material for her "what I did on my summer vacation" essay when she gets back to school next fall. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (KING COBRA PUTTERS) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When we think Cobra Golf, we think metals and irons, but now we can think putters as well. The company has introduced the Inner Mallet (IM) family of putters. The Inner Mallet design is meant to focus visual attention on an "inner mallet," thus assisting alignment. The putter head is made of forged soft alloy aluminum, and has a milled face for a soft feel, and features strategic weight distribution. MSRP: $150 www.cobragolf.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TWO ACES IN ONE ROUND (SAME GOLFER) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Chris Mullen,19, thought he was just plain lucky to score his first hole-in-one last week on the third hole at Bankstown Golf Club in Milperra, Australia. After all, it was only the 16-handicapper's third time out, and he hadn't practiced at all. The 8-iron shot felt "skinny," and he didn't even see it go in. But then he got even luckier than that. On the par-3 seventh hole he did it again. Then at the par-3 eleventh, his tee shot only a few feet from the hole. According to Mullen, "It was all down hill after that." He finished his round at 15-over on a day he says he'll always remember. For sure. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FORGIVE US - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - What's The Difference Between a Bad Golfer And a Bad Skydiver? CHANNEL - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Doesn't it seem like were seeing Chuck Norris and Christy Brinkley on the Golf Channel even more than Tiger Woods. Never mind the pills and bracelets that are sold all day long there. The word around the floor of the PGA Show was that very few golf companies were make money with 30 minute infomercials on the Golf Channel anymore. A 30 minute infomercial may cost you about $ 30,000. You have to sell a lot of golf widgets to break even never mind make money. For example, if you have $ 50 profit margin in a product you have to sell 600 units in that half hour to break even. Actually you have to sell even more because you'll have to add the cost of phone order takers and other order processing costs into that figure. So in order to even think of doing an infomercial on the Golf Channel I think you can see that you need a product with great margins ($50 or more per unit) and something with wide golfer appeal so it will sell a lot of units. Unfortunately until the golf industry really rebounds I think you can expect to see many more none-golf ads and infomercials on the Golf Channel. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - COLUMN TO READ (HABITS OF EFFECTIVE PRACTICERS) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Writing in Golf Digest's online publication, Gregg Steinberg, Ph.D., suggests that one of the five best ways you can practice your golf swing is to do it when you can't actually do it. That is, practice in your mind. He says that when you visualize your swing, you actually cause the muscles involved to "fire," not to the extent that they do in real performance, but in a lesser way. This electrical stimulation translates into muscle memory, he claims. Read about this and four more practice procedures at: <http://www.golfdigest.com/instruction/index.ssf?/instruction/g d200502practicetips.html> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About lawsuits threatened by Champions Tour players who want cart use reinstated:
". . . One player (Purtzer) has a bad back, the other (Fiori) a heart condition . . . as much as I enjoy watching them play, I would almost think its time to hang up the spikes. . . . Tom, Ed, we enjoy your game. Don't spoil it by lawsuits you probably can't win. . . ." JE
About the 2006 Ryder Cup:
The year is 2028 and the 51 year old Ryder Cup Captain Tiger Woods has just finished his line up for the opening round of this year's event. It's been quite a few years since we've had a playing captain - let alone one who is still ranked top 10 in the world. . . . Even with all of his Ryder Cup duties, Tiger still plans to make his goal of finishing in the top twenty in all eight of the majors this season (four on the regular tour and four on the Champions). I don't really have any thoughts on next year's Ryder Cup. But I have high hope for the future . . . Tony Streible
About Tom Lehman as 2006 U.S Ryder Cup captain:
"Lehman is the best choice and his selection of (assistants) Pavin and Roberts is right on. The last team seemed somewhat distant and apart. These guys can stimulate camaraderie, and perhaps, by so doing, mold a team hungry for a win. Tom as player/captain? He wants victory so bad, and this is the type of competition that will allow his best game to surface. Might be the springboard he needs to return to his old self. . . ." Michael
". . . About Lehman playing: The new format allows players who have played well during the year of competition to get more points than those who only played well the year before. If Lehman can qualify to play on the merits I have no problem with him being a playing captain." JMS
"(the) responsibility of the captain in Ryder Cup play is captaining, or providing the team's fast-dry crazy glue, a clean windshield and very bright headlights. . . . Tom is playing very well right now. It is a long time to the Ryder Cup first tee off. . . . if he wants to play, he should abdicate his captaincy." Karl M. Fischer
"Tom Lehman's comment explains why the U.S. has lost the edge in Ryder Cups. It comes down to what is best for me and not what is best for the team. How on earth can a captain inspire his team when he himself is playing and totally absorbed in his own game? . . ." Warwick Weedon
". . . there would be a lot of interest if the PGA would bring the top 24 U.S. players together three times a year to play with each other and give the captain some opportunities to try pairings before the Ryder Cup. . . . Will Lehman make the team? I don't think so, but if he does, then that will say he is still one of the best out there."
