Before we turn our attention to a new year of golf, let's take
one more look back and ask what was a memorable moment for
you, personally, in 2004.  Was it a shot you made that will
forever be etched in your memory?  Was it a shot you saw
someone else make - a friend, a pro?  Something someone said
or did?  Whatever it was you won't soon forget, we'd like to
hear about it.  Any thoughts?

   MORE COURSES WILL REVAMP
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The American Society of Golf Course Architects is predicting
that the impact of technology and other issues will cause a
significant number of golf facilities to "remodel"  in the
near future.  The changes will run the gamut from touch-ups to
overhauls.  Courses 20 years old or older are feeling pressure
to upgrade from newer courses in their vicinity.  ASGCA
President Bill Love suggests that like residential remodeling,
"it's usually wise to develop a master plan, not only to head
off problems, but also to budget for the long term."

   REHEARSE, DON'T PRACTICE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The difference between "practice" and "rehearse" may be
fractional, but if you think of your preliminary "air" putting
strokes as a rehearsal for the main event, not just as
mindless exercises, you'll be able to adjust backswing and
follow-through until they feel just right.

"You don't have to play slowly to play well,"  says
Christopher Smith.  He put his money where his mouth is two
years ago by shooting a 66 in 48 minutes at Oregon's Pumpkin
Ridge Golf Club.  Smith, a speed golfer, is a teaching pro at
Pumpkin Ridge.  To accomplish his speedy rounds he carries
only six clubs, and he runs to his ball after every shot,
which, he admits, makes for a test of endurance as well as a
test of golf.  A speed golf score is the sum of the score
added to the time it takes to play the round.  . "Obviously,
speed golf is an extreme version, but if you could just get it
across to people that (when) you make it a little more
reactionary and natural, your performance actually improves,"
said Smith.

NOTEWORTHY (NEW BB TITANIUM 454 DRIVER)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The newest version of Callaway Golf's Big Bertha driver sports
a 454cc head, the largest ever offered by the company.  In
keeping with Callaway's motto that bigger is better only if
it's engineered right, the 454 is said to combine
unprecedented distance and forgiveness, "demonstrably superior
and pleasingly different," according to Callaway chairman and
CEO Bill Baker.  Company literature describes the 454 as
having "a high moment of inertia, an ultra-thin, refined
titanium face to create a huge effective hitting area on the
hottest face of any conforming Big Bertha driver ever made."
MSRP: $375.

   NOTEWORTHY (NIKE FOUL WEATHER GLOVES)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The start of a new golf season is necessarily accompanied by
remnants of winter weather. So why not start the new season
with a golf glove that performs well under adverse conditions?
Taking cues from the water ski industry, Nike Golf has
developed the Cold Weather and Wet Weather gloves that promise
to deal effectively with the elements.  Both gloves employ a
micro-fiber synthetic leather palm with a tire tread-like
pattern that channels water away from the glove.  The Cold
Weather glove is strategically lined with a densely woven,
quick drying microfiber fleece engineered to keep the wind and
cold out and body heat in.  Its cuff prevents heat from
escaping in that area.  MSRP: $24/ea.

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About the sustainability of Tiger Woods' revised swing:

". . . He took a ton of abuse from the golf media . . . but he
ignored it, and now he looks more comfortable over the ball at
address, and his shot making is coming back. . . . Tiger isn't
content to be number two and will absolutely kick butt in '05
-- six wins with two majors is my prediction --  and back to
number one. . . ."  Christopher "CB" Maxwell

"His swing might hold, but his new putting stroke will not
stand up."  Mike Lucas

". . . don't think the Japan win is a good indicator. And the
Target was a little easier with only 15 players in it at the
end of the year.  If Tiger fails to win a few times . . . he
could lose confidence in the new swing."   KWT

". . . Why not sit back and just enjoy watching what he and
the rest of the field are able to do in 2005 -- and enjoy it."
RW  (Batavia, NY) Can't wait to do just that. Ed.

. . . we could be competing against each other for years to
come." - Lorena Ochoa, about the LPGA's young guns.
