YOUR THOUGHTS? This week we turn our (your) attention to Paul Casey. Since his November gaffe, when during the WGC-World Cup in Spain he "dissed" the U.S. (See CASEY WITH THE BAT below.), we've steered clear of the subject. Now that we're into the new season when despite Casey's apologies he's going to take heat for his indiscretion, we wonder just how high the temperature will rise, and what, if any, are the acceptable parameters of retribution by U.S. fans. Any thoughts? rod@golfhelp.com

Even so, on the threshold of a new season when Casey is likely to encounter some pay-back, we are satisfied just to remind readers that Casey's remarks included references to hating Americans. In the meantime, he got a pass at last week's Sony Open where both he and Michelle Wie shot 149 and missed the cut. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SIMPLESWING™ - THE AMAZING NEW EASY-TO-LEARN GOLF SWING! Then return to a lighter grip. You'll find that this will relax not only your grip, but also your arms. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - THEY'RE NOT YOUR PLAIN-JANE CARTS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Got an extra $20 grand to spend on a motor vehicle? If you do and you live in Florida in a residential complex called The Villages, you might spend it on a new "golf car" made to resemble a Hummer or a '34 Ford. It sounds like a lot of money for a golf cart, but when you consider that these babies can double as daily transportation on specially designated byways in the 22-thousand acre development, the price may not look so daunting. Thirty restaurants, six churches, 300 holes of golf, a polo grounds, theaters, clubs, grocery stores, strip malls and office complexes are just a golf car ride away, where many are opting to drive in style. www.LuxuryCarts.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SITE TO SEE (C-THRUGRIPS.COM - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - C-Thru Grips are clear, tour-quality putter and full swing golf grips through which one can see custom graphic designs, slogans, logos, etc. The grips and design labels, are easily installed on clean shafts with plain old hairspray. C-Thru Grips are made by Golf Pride. http://www.c-thrugrips.com/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTEWORTHY (LAUNCHER DRIVING IRON) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cleveland Golf has introduced a driving iron with a hollow head and a unique internal weighting system that deepens the center of gravity and makes for better stability and distance, according to company claims. Part of Cleveland's Launcher line, the Launcher Driving Iron is meant to be distinct from so-called "utility" clubs in that it is specifically designed for driving. "Better players," according to director of product marketing Todd Harman, "will really benefit from it off the tee on tight driving holes." Purchase the LDI with a loft of 18 or 21 degrees. Among the changed bunkers is the famous "road bunker" on the 17th, which has been made three feet wider and the ground around re-contoured so as to better gather misguided golf balls. Also, the 12th hole has been made 35 yards longer, and the lip of the bunker in front of the hole has been lowered to make it invisible from the tee. Altogether, at 7,200 yards, the course will be 185 yards longer than it was in 2000, and at 616 yards the par-5 14th will be the longest hole in any Open venue. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About Arnold Palmer's recommendation that U.S. players travel more:
". . . agree with Arnold Palmer." Miguel Vivas
"Arnold is probably right, but it is pretty hard for a player to pass on a tournament that has a purse that is many times more lucrative just to play in a foreign country . . ." DW
". . . don't know if I agree . . . You make more money and gain more prestige playing on the PGA Tour in the states even if you only make it into the top-30 weekly. . . EG
". . . agree with Mr. Palmer. If an American golfer is going to call himself "world class," then he needs to measure himself against the world. Granted, in the major tournaments, the world comes to him. In fact, in an act of hubris and Amerocentrism, many of us may rush to point out that the best players in the world play here on the PGA tour. However, on the global scale, the American champion has no more claim to world class status than do the Red Sox, who compete solely on American soil against American baseball teams, as world champions of baseball. Let he who desires to be truly "world class," like Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, compete in tournaments outside the United States. Likewise, let us not carelessly label "world class" those who choose to play solely in the United States." Dan Cabanas (San Bernardino, Calif.)
"He is right, in some regards. Travel for Americans most anywhere these days is a risk. . . The other issue is the money. it's always the money, really. As long as we have so many big-buck events here, almost every week, why travel?" MK
About a memorable golfing moment:
". . . was golfing at the first hole at Lancaster Park Golf Club, Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Not feeling very well, I hit a miraculous 3-wood 290 yards. I mean I hit it with all the purity in the world. I had a 40-yard 60-degree wedge to 4 feet to the pin. . . got the birdie. As I was picking the ball out of the hole, I had a strange pain in my chest. It felt as if someone had hit me in the chest with a sledgehammer. I told everyone I was all right, but didn't make it to the next hole. I was indeed having a heart attack. I was rushed to hospital, where I flat-lined. . . . was brought back to life by the ER nurses . . . the most incredible part about the whole story belongs to my wife. I used to weld artwork during my off hours, and it seemed appropriate that day that I continue welding. My wife who was going out with the kids to go shopping for several hours, reminded me of what a beautiful day it was and why didn't I go golfing up at the club. . . . I owe my life to her for suggesting I go golfing. She would have found me face down in the shop, if I hadn't gone. . . . I had lots of friends around when I went down and got the attention I required. . . . I owe them as well. It just goes to show, we men should listen to our wives more often." Alex G.
