YOUR THOUGHTS?
The flap last week was about so-called "appearance" money. (See THEY
APPEAR TO APPEAR FOR THE $ below.)  It seems that in order to beef up
the Ford Championship player field some big bucks were offered to a few
top players just for showing up.  Some think this is legit.  Others are
not so sure.  Any thoughts?

Last year 84 Lumber attracted an impressive field by offering every
player eligible for its tournament six first-class seats on a charter
to Ireland for the WGC-American Express Championship.  At this year's
Doral, the corporate outing featured Vijay Singh (No. 1), Retief Goosen
(No. 5), Sergio Garcia (No. 6) and Padraig Harrington (No. 8), each of
whom it is said received upwards of $150,000 for participating.  All
four players are clients of the same promotional firm, International
Management Group (IMG).  It's no secret that tournament organizers
offer perks (Mercedes courtesy cars) they hope will attract as many top
players as possible.  Where some worry sets in is at the point where
these bonus offerings, under whatever guise they're proposed, become
competitions themselves.  Some say this situation bears watching.

    TROUBLES AT NATURAL GOLF
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A number of golf companies seem to be really struggling in the current
challenging .golf marketplace. Numbers are sometimes hard to come by
except on public companies. Natural Golf seems to be in a especially
bad position. Their stock price <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&s=NAX>
is down to $ .20 from $5.00. Their 10k report to the SEC
<http://biz.yahoo.com/e/050228/nax10ksb.html> has some particularly
scary stuff in it like this: "WE ARE CURRENTLY INSOLVENT AND WILL NOT
BE ABLE TO REPAY OUR OBLIGATIONS WHEN THEY BECOME DUE WITHOUT
SIGNIFICANT ADDITIONAL FUNDING. IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE ADDITIONAL FUNDING,
WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE OUR OPERATIONS AS CURRENTLY
CONTEMPLATED."

Tom and Melissa Lehman, Fred and Thais Couples and Duffy and Vicky
Waldorf have collaborated with authors Kay Davidoff-Ziplow and Leslie F.

Golf Professionals and Their Wives.  Here you'll get a glimpse of the
private lives (the ups and downs) of, not only the collaborators, but
also of 96 other pros who contributed to the undertaking, including the

OUT OF BOUNDS GOLF CLUBS ON EBAY
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The next time you see a bargain on golf clubs on eBay, consider that
they might be hot, not in the sense that they are popular at the moment,
but that they've been stolen.  Take, for instance, the recent bust of
a ring in the New Orleans area where so far four men have been arrested
for stealing thousands of golf clubs from various country clubs, then
selling them on the auction site for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Among them was Jason Helmke, a golf pro.  The break in the case came
when a golfer who is also and avid eBay user, recognized his stolen
clubs on the site. A friend, whose clubs had also been taken from their
vandalized country club locker room, recognized his clubs, too.  It
wasn't long before the sheriff was on the case.  Twelve hundred golf
clubs were recovered.

COLUMN TO READ: HEWITT ON KEEPING UP APPEARANCES
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
As we mentioned above, everyone (almost) was writing about the
implications of the "appearance" money paid to a few players at thee
Doral.  One of these people was The Golf Channel's Brian Hewitt.  In a
piece entitled Keeping Up Appearances, he includes part of a letter to
the PGA Tour from The International Management Group (IMG), offering to
formalize the practice of pay-for-play, in the process enticing players
to participate in tournaments they have not in the past played in.

     GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About Tiger Woods'suggestion for a shorter schedule:

". . . it's easy for a number one player to make a statement like that.
The tournaments divert millions of dollars to charities each year.
Should the schedule shrink, everyone loses. . . ." Jes

"Woods is only one person on the Tour. What do the other players think?
Did anyone hear from them or ask them? . . ." Fred Seltman

"The PGA pretty much has to do it.  I love golf but I can't keep up,
and am getting jaded. The number of tournaments spreads the serious
talent, and big names, too thin.  I can't take some guy seriously for
winning the podunk open without a top 10 player in the field.  Cut the
tournaments and the size of the checks.  Some of these guys are making
a great living just getting into the top 40 every week.  If one can't
compete for the big prize once in a while, then go get a real job." MK

". . . what about the non-superstars?  Don't they need a Tigerless or
Leftyless or superstarless tournament play in in order to make a
living?" Eric B.

"Seems like Tiger Woods does a lot of complaining now that he's been in
the big money for a while.  I realize they practice and travel a lot
but a lot of us work five days a week all year and have to pay for all
our equipment and clothes. . . ."  Carol

"I think Tiger has a problem with reality when it comes to the number
of tournaments in a season. He plays 18 times a year and thinks that
the season is too long.  After the PGA Championship no one sees him or
many of the top 20  players unless it is the Ryder or Presidents Cup,
WGC or maybe
Tiger's Target World Challenge. I'm glad it's about championships and
not about the money?  The day that he plays at least every tournament
once in a three year rotation then I'll start to listen about how long
the season is. Maybe the golfers should stop playing all of those silly
season events in Nov and Dec so they get a break. . . ."  Glen Flanagan

". . . That's all well and good for him and the other major Tour
players, but does not accommodate the journeyman pro who is trying to
enter as many tournaments as possible to get the big break, winning the
first time on Tour. . . ." Robert Goff

About changes to the Old Course to make the Open more challenging:

"If Mr. Dawson and the R&A really wanted to put those old, punishing
bunkers back into play, there's a simpler less expensinve way than
adding new structure to the old course.  Once the players arrive, each
will have their modern equipment confiscated during the event and
replaced by the following implements: A) wooden woods with steel shafts,
B) forged blade irons with steel shafts and C) putters comprised of
steel shafts with choice of solid faced heel-shaft blades (or mallets)
or center-shaft models. No multi-layer, urethane balls will be
permitted.  Any others of modern design will be acceptable. . . ." Jeff
Stern (Selma, NC)
