YOUR THOUGHTS?
Retief Goosen was bounced from the Nissan Open two weeks ago
because he overslept and missed his pro-am tee time.  Some say
the rule he broke is unfair.  (See SLEEP IN, YOU'RE OUT
below.)  Any thoughts?

   SLEEP IN, YOU'RE OUT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Whether he knew about the 14-month-old rule or not, no matter
that he had traveled from London to Los Angeles to play in the
Nissan Open, Reteif Goosen was disqualified for missing his
tee time for the Nissan pro-am.  Goosen, a two-time U.S. Open
winner, and one of only two of the top ten ranked players to
appear for the Nissan event, had overslept, he said.  Nick
Price suggested that the rule should allow players one
exception per year, with fines imposed thereafter for
subsequent transgressions.  He suggested that since Goosen had
traveled through several time zones to get to L.A., it is nor
surprising that he overslept.

   TAKE IT BACK
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
You can't get the clubface back to the ball squarely if you
haven't made the correct takeaway, that is unless you have
contortionist genes or the golf fairy on your shoulder.  So
try this:  swing your club back to about waist high, then
check to see that it's even with your toes and in a line
perpendicular to them.  If the club is too far beyond or too
far behind the line, you'll need to make this a drill correct
the tendency.

   OLD COURSE GETS NEW LOOK
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Old Course at St Andrews has undergone some significant
changes in preparation for the 2005 Open Championship in July,
all calculated to make play more difficult.  The need to do so
was perpetuated, of course, by what some would call the
"demon" technology factor.  Alterations to the playing field
include five new tees which put back into play hazards players
have been able to out-drive in recent years, aided by super
clubs, hotter golf balls, and their own better physical
conditioning.  In a BBC interview recently, R&A chief
executive Peter Dawson said, "We are committed to staging a
championship that isn't just for golfers who hit the ball a
long way. . . . we just want to re-instate the old decisions
players had to make."

   NOTEWORTHY (SRIXON WEDGES)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The new Srixon Sports WG-504 wedges feature a unique heel
grinding which, according to the company, allows the club face
to be opened up for play from sand or greenside.  They're said
to be well-suited for getting the blade under the ball to
achieve the high, soft-landing flop shot.  A modified v-groove
promises lots of spin and good control.  The finish is
non-glare gun metal.  Seven different loft and bounce
combinations are available.  MSRP: $149

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Is it too early to pick out a Fathers Day gift?  Is it ever to
early to acquire a neat gadget?  We say no to both questions,
which is why we're suggesting a look at MarkMender.com.  What
you've got here is an appliance with scissor-like prongs that
when inserted into a green to bracket a ball mark, will fix
the mark when squeezed from above.  And if your golf balls
don't often make dents on greens, the MarkMender can be used
to cradle your cigar while you putt.  Get it with corporate or
course logo if you wish.  Cost: $34.95/4-pack.

   NOISY LEADERBOARDS TO BE REPLACED
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Technology is about to attack the Tour's on-course
leaderboards, thus ending the racket-making  change-overs that
have characterized them for 17 years.  First introduced at the
Westchester Country Club in 1988,  their machine-gun-like
sounding turnovers have rattled players within hearing
distance ever since.  The boards, powered by golf cart
batteries, change about every 10 seconds.  The new boards will
be more like computer monitors, and will relay not only
scores, but also Shotlink information and, in key events,
video clips of players and significant shot-making.  The first
of the new leaderboards should appear in 2007.

COLUMN TO READ (CAMPBELL ON NEW VS. OLD)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Writing in the Houston Chronicle last week, Steve Campbell
took a look at professional golf today and compared it to the
way golf used to be - the way it was meant to be, as he put
it.  It was last weekend's match play championship that gave
Campbell pause.  His main point:  golf today is too much about
"uniformity" and manicurity (our word).  Players are perhaps
"soft" and maybe spoiled.  Give him the good old days when, as
in match play, competition was mano a mano.  No drops.  Just
hit it, find it, and hit it again.  Check him out at:

    GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
About professional golf and transgender issues:

Oh, leave us alone, who cares if one of the ladies who used to
be a man is able to play in the LGU event.......there's enough
men out there anyway playing golf like so-called girlies --
having tantrums when things go wrong or putting up short to
the hole.  Christine

". . . in golf, where every single stroke is so complex and
unpredictable, one's sex --  male,  female,  or mixed,  should
really not make much difference at all. . . ."  Marcus

"If you have had a sex change and you live your life as a
member of that sex, you should play in those tournaments. . .
."  Carol

"Still, body structure is that of a man. . . ."  G

"The basic rule of golf is to "play it as it lies."  If you
change the lie you have cheated and should be disqualified.
This simple rule must also apply to gender. . . ."  LJL

"Years ago, I remember a professional tennis player who
changed sex from male to female and continued to play. . . .
."  DR

"This puts a whole new meaning on making the cut." GC

". . . He may be a female at heart, but she was born a guy and
the body structure is still male.  The ratings will go up for
awhile . . . but it still sounds like a circus."  MK

"Let them play." DM
