YOUR THOUGHTS? How much more concentration does it take to play good golf than it does to play other sports well? Do professional bowlers, for example, expect or require noiseless surroundings? Has golf's absolute spectator silence tradition outlived its practicality? We are reminded to ask the question by Ernie Els' recent suggestion that metal detectors be used to stop fans from distracting players by chatting it up on their mobile phones. (See ELS: USE METAL DECTECTORS below). Will (should) the all-quiet practice live on in an increasingly noisy society, one to which the word "etiquette" is increasingly foreign to begin with? rod@golfhelp.com

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ELS: USE METAL DECTECTOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ernie Els claims to have been bothered by cell phone talkers several times during his second round in the Asian Open, which lead him to propose that metal detectors be used to prevent such player distraction. Observing that it would be difficult to control the behavior of 330 million Asian mobile phone owners, Els admitted it would take much money and manpower, but added "I'm sure if you asked the players, the majority would agree." If you ask the Asians, however, as someone did, you'll hear that "nobody likes to be parted from their mobile." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOLFFINS INTRODUCES 2 NEW MODELS !! That is, the shaft of your club at impact is leaning backward, not forward, causing any one of a number of mishits. Try this to mend your ways. Place two balls on the ground six or seven inches apart. Set up to the forward ball, then move the clubhead from behind the front ball to behind the other ball. From this position make a swing intending to strike the front ball. If you execute the swing without hitting the rear ball in the process, you have correctly "hit down" on the ball. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR TENTATIVE ABOUT FUTURE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The TPC at Avenel golf course in Potomac, MD is the traditional venue for the Booz Allen Classic. This season, however, on June 9-12, the BAC will be played at the nearby Congressional Country Club instead. The temporary change was made so that Avenel could undergo a major renovation. Problem is that to date no renovation has taken place, nor has it even begun. And the people at Booze Allen are none too happy. Because the event is normally held the week after the U.S. Open, it has trouble fielding major players. Not so this year, but what about next when Booz Allen's contract will expire? Chairman Ralph Shrader addressed the problem last week by saying, "The issues that are of concern to us are the venue and the dates. . . . Avenel, long-term, does not meet my expectations for the kind of quality venue necessary to attract a field." Will Booz Allen follow long-term former sponsor out the door? NANOTECH CORRECTS BALL FLIGHT - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - REQUIEM FOR THE 1-IRON - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Check out the inventory at your favorite golf store and you'll be hard pressed to find a 1-iron in stock. This dying, if not dead, breed of golf club has given way, first to the fairway metal, then to the hybrid. When not too long ago it made sense to ask how many pros carried a hybrid club, today one might ask how many do not. One might also as whether or not the passing of the 1-iron has taken some of the "wow" out of professional golf. Now that it's possible to get the same or a better result from a tough spot without taking the risk associated with a "butter knife," will we ever again see the likes of a Jack Nicklaus 1-iron shot from 238 yards -- uphill, all carry, and into the wind -- to 20 feet from the pin at the 1967 U.S. Open? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ISN'T IT TIME YOU HAD A BETTER SHORT GAME - NOW YOU CAN! One player, Simon Kahn, has already had the axe fall to the tune of the equivalent of $19,400 (USD), this imposed for slow play at the Irish Open. Kahn, who only the week before was fined half that amount for the same reason, took too much time to tee off on the 17th hole. Fellow Tour player Padraig Harrington observed that there is a significant difference between the European and USA Tours in the way they treat the problem. He characterized the US Tour as "slack." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SITE TO SEE (SKYGOLFGPS.COM) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - One company has made it possible for a golfer to carry a satellite-based distance determining gadget from course-to-course. SkyHawke Technologies, LLC, of Mississippi has built the SkyGolf SG2 rangefinder, which requires the user to download a golf course blueprint from the company website. The mobile phone sized range finder then uses global positioning technology to determine distances from tee to green and most points in between, and to measure shot distances as well. The company claims for the SG2 a five-shot improvement per round and a time saving of 25-minutes per nine holes. Blueprints of more than 5,000 top courses are presently available. "Tiger's total will exceed Jack's. Likely makeup will be: 7 Masters, 3 Opens, 5 U.S. Opens and 4/5 PGAs. The U.S. Open record count will settle the "greatest" debate until someone else steps up in thirty years or so." Chuck Fuhrman
". . . Tiger can win 18+ majors but will have to change his swing multiple times to do it. His current swing is still very athletic, and over time will (fall prey) to age and injury. He has the mental toughness to do this, more so than any other player on tour."
