YOUR THOUGHTS? If you're a regular reader of this humble fare, you've perhaps noticed that Golf World's Ron Sirak is one of our favorite observers of the golf scene. In a column last February entitled Why We Love Daly (See SIRAK ON DALY below.), Sirak nails down what makes for Daly's unflagging popularity. This week we ask for your take, not on Daly, but on other players past and present who have managed to sustain similar fan approbation. Mention your favorites, and tell why. rod@golfhelp.com

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SIRAK ON DALY - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ron Sirak knows how to turn a phrase. His noting early this year that John Daly's waistline is (was) like "a generous scoop of ice cream spilling over the edge of a sugar cone" not only calls up the picture of Long John, but also uses imagery (ice cream) that "no one doesn't like" (to use a bad phrase). Without in any way approving of Daly's over-the-top former behavior, Sirak suggests that the reason for the sometime portly golfer's popularity lies with the "Everyman" impression he emits, the fans' perception that despite his prowess on the golf course, he's just like us or like someone we know. We like him for his shortcomings and for his head-on approach to life as well as to the green. http://www.golfhelp.com/a/go.php?c=DS_060805_2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ISN'T IT TIME YOU HAD A BETTER SHORT GAME - NOW YOU CAN! Setting up for the putt, take one final look at the hole, then draw your eyes back along the line. When your eyes get back to the ball, make a head-still pendulum swing to send the ball back down the line your eyes had just traversed. Bill Kroen calls this "draw back and fire." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SITE TO SEE (GOLFGYM.COM) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The word here is that resistance is good for your golf game. How can that be, you ask. You get resistance from your better half, and there's nothing good about that. The web log is the means by which anyone, anywhere can sound off on anything, and, not surprisingly, the world of golf has not avoided blogger scrutiny. In fact TaylorMade Golf has its very own blog site ( www.carlsbadconfidential ). We're not quite sure why, though, unless it's to lay some pipe for forthcoming products - like the r7 TP Fairway Woods, due out in mid-June, complete with moveable weights. The blog speculates that as moveable weight technology has apparently caught on, consumers may ultimately have to carry a slew of different wrenches to accommodate different club brands. At any rate, the new r7 TP Fairway Woods are said to be priced at: $500, graphite; $450, steel. There has been talk that owing to less than optimal spring weather conditions the course may not measure up to USGA standards. Not so, says Mike Davis, the U.S. Golf Association senior director of competitions. Davis walked the course and liked what he saw. The focus of concern is the rough, which needs lots of water and heat to get to the stipulated 3" height. Expected temperature increases should insure the goal is reached. The 460cc club, called the Redline RPM 460 DUAL, has two weights to jockey, making it the largest legal driver of its kind on the market. According to its maker, the 460 DUAL is not only forgiving, but also versatile, allowing for different launch conditions as the center of gravity is adjusted. It also incorporates the company's proprietary Xface engineering which lengthens the COR zone across the face for greater ball speed on both center and off-center hits. Buy the driver in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5 degrees for right hand players and 9.5 and 10.5 degrees for southpaws. In a recent publication, the NGF revealed figures showing a decline in the number of U.S. "core" golfers since 2003. The NGF defines a core golfer as one who plays at least eight rounds annually. The number of core golfers was 12.8 million in 2004, 4.7% lower than the 13.4 million recorded in 2003. Additionally, fewer rounds were played in April, 2005, than in April the year before. Despite the recent decline, no trend appears to be taking place. Other than a spike referred to as the "Tiger effect" between 1997 and 2000, the number of core golfers has remained relatively stable. http://www.golfhelp.com/a/go.php?c=ngf - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About Cristie Kerr, sex appeal, and the LPGA:
"It is a shame, but sex appeal sells more than great golf when it comes to the women. I think it should be used within reason. . . ." Carol
"Good Grief! Are we saying that adding sex appeal to the LPGA is a bad thing! Kerr, Natalie . . . what more could we ask for? Articulate, good golfers, and easy on the eyes. Just the ticket. Call me a sexist and you would probably be right. Viva the difference!" CB Maxwell
". . . What's wrong with looking attractive and being good at a sport at the same time . . ." EG
"Agree absolutely with Cristie Kerr . . . sex sells . . . and I would reckon that the LPGA Tour already have realized that, and if they have not, (they should) take a look at the women tennis players. . . ." KH
"If you want to attract a larger male audience, Ms. Kerr is on the right track. The recent popularity of the PGA is, in part, due to younger, stronger guys out there making older courses obsolete. The ladies just need to put their best foot forward. Looking your best is not illegal. Although some on the tour seem to think so." AF
". . . Sex will definitely sell products and the LPGA is a product which could/should use the set of tools they've been blessed with to increase their sales. I wish the LPGA the best of luck . . ." JR
". . . There has always been the stereotype of a masculine lady golfer. This look has changed dramatically, and, without losing sight of golfing ability, the (new look) should be showcased and admired. . . . Kudos to Ms. Kerr for her birdie contribution. . . ." jes (Ms. Kerr, who sponsors the charity www.birdiesforbreastcancer.com herself donated $250 for each of the 11 birdies she made at the Sybase Classic. Ed.) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SPONSOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Rights and Wrongs of Golf---One hour and fifteen minutes of video to improve your game!
